Motorsport Weekend Preview

Apr 12, 2024

From Misano to Fort Worth; Phillip Island to Dunedin, Giltrap-backed drivers are taking on the world this weekend.

Porsche Sprint Challenge

Fresh from winning the GT New Zealand GT4 Championship with Giltrap Motorsport, Brock Gilchrist is set to have his Australian racing debut in Round 1 of the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge this weekend.

The 20-year-old is the 2024 Porsche Team New Zealand scholarship driver and will be run by Earl Bamber Motorsport in the series.

Gilchrist comes to the Philip Island, a notoriously fast circuit, with no experience of the track or the car, so will be leaning on his natural abilities and the team around him to get up to speed with what is looking like a competitive field.

After taking pole and a win on debut in the GTNZ GT4 Championship though, hopes are high for the young Kiwi.

NASCAR Xfinity

After two straight rounds on short-ovals, Nascar Xfinity is returning to higher speed racing at the Texas Motor Speedway intermediate quad-oval.

SVG has been building his skillset and pace in the Xfinity car every weekend, with some poor luck leading to results that understate his ability.

He’ll be looking to keep it clean this weekend as he aims to return to the top-3 positions that he hasn’t been part of since Atlanta.

NZ Rally Championship

It’s the opening round of the Rally New Zealand Championship, with Ben Hunt returning with Skoda, hoping 2024 can be there year he finally trumps favourite Hayden Paddon dominant form.

The opening round in Otago gives Hunt a great opportunity to start the season strong, as Paddon is in Hungary contesting the opening round of the European Rally Championship, missing a round in NZ that he is normally incredibly strong at.

Formula E

It’s a double-header in Italy this weekend for Formula E as they head to the Misano circuit.

After a tough weekend in Tokyo, the Jaguar TCS Racing pair of Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy will be looking to claw back some championship points and continue building their advantage in the teams championship.

In the drivers championship, Cassidy sits just two points away from current leader Pascal Wehrlein, while Evans has had a tricky start to the season and is sitting in P6, just over 20 points short of the leaders.
