With strong practice and qualifying sessions out of the way, the Kiwis set about a spectacular drive in extremely dicey conditions to take a decisive victory some 1:07 ahead of second place.

The famous rains of Sepang have wreaked havoc on yet another motorsport event, causing a lengthy delay to Marco Giltrap’s debut outing at Malaysia’s iconic 5.543km, FIA Grade 1 International Circuit.

Despite the torrential downpour however, the pairing of Giltrap and Lamborghini Super Trofeo defending champion, Chris Van der Drift, trounced the field to take a commanding win.

Giltrap arguably had the trickier conditions, starting from third on the grid in the opening stanza following an almost hour delay from the rain storm.

Sheets of water remained on the track surface throwing large rooster tails from the rear of the leading cars driven by Daniel Wells and Jackson Walls. The Kiwi GT Champion, showing maturity and good race craft, kept the Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2 within close contact throughout the changing track conditions.

Giltrap was among the earlier drivers to pit, handing the Absolute Racing / Giltrap Group Lamborghini over to veteran Pro and fellow Kiwi driver, Chris Van der Drift. Van der Drift, no stranger to Sepang, set to work with a series of simply outstanding laps to claim the lead.

Van der Drift’s pace was relentless and in spectacular style he went on to extend the lead by a whopping 1 minute and 7 seconds over the P2 placeholders, TRT Racing’s Johnathan Cecetto and Li Qiang.
