External and internal Radar systems will monitor the road ahead as well as the occupants within to improve safety, even should the driver become distracted, falls asleep or have a medical event.

At the heart of everything Volvo is safety and you can rest assured that when the brand reveals what is touted as the successor to the XC90 SUV in November, it will boast the most cutting edge safety features available in the automotive industry.

The upcoming EX90 electric SUV is expected to launch in 2023 and will exhibit a significant leap forward in autonomous technologies and driver-assist systems. Volvo say the car marks the start of a new era for safety and the company. Featuring a unique-to-Volvo combination of core computing and software, it is engineered to keep Volvo firmly aligned to their vision: that no one should be seriously injured or killed in a new Volvo car.

To be revealed November 9, you can expect to see a significant leap forward Volvo around the EX90’s capabilities in driver attention monitoring systems. All EX90s will feature Ride Pilot technology, a Level 3 autonomous driving system that maintains a heightened control of the vehicle. Naturally, for all those times when Ride Pilot is not in use, driver attention will still be crucial, but the level of autonomy will herald a new level of safety leadership for the brand.

"Safety is not just a marketing exercise or another regulatory hurdle we need to clear, safety is at the very core of our purpose. Volvo has been here for 100 years, as a leader in safety, setting new standards and inventing new technologies. We’re taking that leadership into the next 100 years.” Says Volvo Cars CEO, Jim Rowan.

The EX90 will feature more technology than any Volvo before it, made up of cameras, radars, ultrasonic sensors and importantly a LiDAR system in the roofline. A precision light-enabled radar system that measures distance with pulse LASER. The system, says Rowan, will be able to detect something as small and unreflective as a black tyre, on a black road, in pitch black 120 metres ahead even at highway speeds.

All of this will be powered with the automaker's unique software and programming and while the LiDAR will be watching the road ahead, systems will also be computing the driver’s eye gaze, able to determine when they become tired or inattentive. Even if the driver falls asleep or has a medical event, the system will be able to safely slow the car down and call for help.

The interior radar system will not just protect occupants when the vehicle is moving. Volvo understand that on Hot or Cold days, distraction can lead to tragedy. The XE90 will be able to detect the slightest of movements like the light breathing of a child and can send you a gentle reminder should they have been left in the vehicle.

Volvo believe this combination of internal and external monitoring will be a huge leap forward in realising their vision.
