Motorsport Preview: Matt Payne with Supercars Championship glory in sight
Matt Payne heads into the semi-final weekend of the 2025 Supercars Championship at Sandown with momentum and determination, as the young Kiwi looks to secure his spot in the Grand Final. After a strong showing at the Gold Coast 500, including a top-five finish on Sunday despite a pit lane penalty earlier in the weekend. Payne sits third in the standings among the seven remaining title contenders.

Sandown Raceway presents a crucial challenge, with two 250km races deciding which four drivers will progress to Adelaide. The circuit’s fast, flowing layout and long race format are well-suited to Payne’s strengths — consistent race pace, clean driving, and smart tyre management. While qualifying remains an area for improvement, his ability to make up ground in longer races has been a key factor in his championship push.
For Payne and Grove Racing, execution will be everything. Avoiding pit lane errors, nailing strategy, and keeping out of trouble across the weekend will be vital. With teammate Kai Allen also in contention, teamwork and timing could play a decisive role. As the pressure builds and elimination looms, Payne’s composure and consistency may once again prove his biggest assets and could carry him one step closer to championship glory.
