Volkswagen celebrate 50 years of the Polo
The Polo emerged as part of Volkswagen’s shift from the Beetle in the 1970s. Launched alongside the Passat and Golf, it was designed to be nimble, functional, and a little more refined than its predecessors. At just 3.5 meters long, the first-generation Polo was compact and based on the Audi 50.
Each new generation introduced meaningful improvements. The second-generation model, launched in 1981, offered more space and comfort, while 1987’s Polo Coupé GT G40 brought supercharged performance into the mix. The third-generation Polo, introduced in 1994, was among the first in its class to feature airbags, building on Volkswagen’s reputation for safety. By 1998, a GTI version added a sportier side to the compact hatch.
From 2002, the fourth-generation Polo grew in size and refinement, introducing standard ABS and improved comfort. The fifth generation, arriving in 2009, embraced digital advancements with infotainment and driver assistance systems. Volkswagen also took the Polo to the world stage, with the Polo R WRC securing four consecutive World Rally Championship titles from 2013 to 2016. The latest seventh-generation Polo continues to set benchmarks and will be arriving in showrooms this year.
Volkswagen Classic will mark the anniversary with a series of special exhibits, beginning with the Bremen Classic Motorshow in early 2025. Half a century since its debut, the Polo remains one of Volkswagens best-sellers and perfectly encapsulates the everyday practicality that the brand is known for.
