Double win for Porsche

With its local debut just over the horizon, the Porsche Taycan electric sports car is set to arrive on New Zealand soil with no less than two prestigious World Car of the Year titles already to its name.

The Porsche Taycan electric sports car has won two 2020 World Car of the Year awards...

with firsts in two categories seeing it crowned the 2020 World Luxury Car and the 2020 World Performance Car of the Year.

Within the World Performance Car categorythe Taycan came out on top in a historic triple against the Porsche 911 and the 718 Spyder/Cayman GT4, both of which were also nominated 

This is the sixth win for Porsche AG in the World Performance Car categoryhaving previously won the class in 2017, 2014, 2013, 2012 and 2006. It is the first win for Porsche AG in the World Luxury Car category. 

“This double win in the categories of World Performance Car and World Luxury Car underlines what we wanted to achieve when we developed the Taycan,” said Michael SteinerMember of the Executive Board, Research and DevelopmentPorsche AG. 

We wanted to create a driver-focused, fully electric sports car that can take on any performance car. At the same time, we focused on uncompromised everyday usabilitycontemporary, digital luxury and comfort for four passengers. We are delighted that the WCOTY jury rewarded these efforts.”  

Vehicles vying for World Car of the Year titles are selected and voted on by an international jury panel, this year comprising 86 prominent automotive journalists from 24 countries around the world. Each juror was appointed by the World Car Steering Committee on the basis of his or her expertise, experience, credibility and influence. Accounting firm KPMG tabulated the jurors’ ballots. 

In deference to the impact of the global Covid-19 pandemic, the reveal of the 2020 World Car Awards winners was announced purely via digital media. 

“The World Car Awards and our 86 jurors from around the world recognise the widespread impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and extend our condolences to all those affected,” the World Car Steering Committee said in a press statement. 

 Taycan Turbo S 2019 Porsche Charge

2020 marks the 15th year of the World Car Awards partnership with the New York International Auto Show. The show has been rescheduled for late August. The World Car Awards will launch its 2021 program at this time instead of at the Paris Motor Show. The launch will include a preliminary list of eligible vehicles for the 2021 season. 

The vote for World Car of the Year continues a winning streak for Porsche: the Taycan, along with the new 911, which was launched last year, has already won around 40 prizes in a multitude of international markets. 

New Zealand’s first Porsche Taycans will arrive in the country later in 2020.
