The upcoming Volvo ES90 is a tech-fest

Volvo is set to unveil its latest fully electric model, the ES90, on March 5, 2025. The new electrified model pushes forward Volvo’s commitment to software-defined vehicles, designed to be able to continuously evolve during ownership.

The ES90 is Volvo’s most powerful vehicle, but not in horsepower, rather in terms of core computing capacity, featuring a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin configuration. This advanced system processes up to a barely comprehensible 508 trillion operations per second, managing AI-based safety features, vehicle sensors, and battery efficiency.

The ES90’s primary core computer provides an eightfold improvement in AI computing power compared to any previous Volvo. This upgrade allows for the expansion of deep learning models and neural networks, supporting continuous improvements through data collection and software updates.

Safety is a core focus of the ES90, with Volvo’s ‘Safe Space Technology’ being central to its design. The model is equipped with lidar, radars, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles and activate collision avoidance measures. An advanced driver-understanding system further enhances safety.

Existing EX90 owners will also receive an upgrade to their vehicles as part of Volvo’s commitment to continuous improvement. The EX90’s current computing setup will be enhanced with dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin technology at no additional cost to customers.

“The Volvo ES90 is one of the most technically advanced cars on the market today and is designed to be improved further with time,” said Anders Bell, Volvo’s Chief Engineering and Technology Officer.
