Audi simplifies nomenclature

Audi will standardize its alphanumeric format across all markets in a bid to make their range easier to decipher for consumers, scrapping the recently introduced distinction between electric and combustion-engine vehicles based on numbering.

“This decision is the result of intensive discussions and also follows the wishes of our customers as well as feedback from our international dealers,” said Marco Schubert, Member of the Board of Management for Sales and Marketing at AUDI AG. “Our nomenclature now provides all customers worldwide with an intuitive orientation in our portfolio.”

Under the new system, Audi’s global model names will feature a mix of letters and numbers. The letters A and Q will continue to separate low-floor and high-floor vehicles, while numbers—ranging from one to eight—will indicate size and positioning, regardless of powertrain.

To keep things clear, Audi will stick with familiar labels like Avant, Sedan, and Sportback, along with powertrain codes such as e-tron, TFSI e, TFSI, and TDI. So, while the naming is getting a refresh, the essentials remain unchanged.

The first model to showcase the revised system will be the combustion-powered Audi A6, set for a global debut on March 4. This update ensures that variants like the A6 Avant TFSI and the all-electric A6 Avant e-tron remain clearly distinguished.

Audi has confirmed that no retroactive name changes will be made to existing models. With this approach, the brand aims to provide customers with a consistent and transparent naming strategy - because buying a car shouldn’t feel like solving a puzzle.
