Standard Issue X Tracey Tawhiao

Following the sold-out autumn toned first release, Standard Issue have introduced new colourways for their collaboration with local artist, Tracey Tawhiao.

Tracey has exhibited her paintings and installations all around the world.

Ethical fashion label, Standard Issue, have partnered with local artist Tracey Tawhiao to create the Ora Blanket to celebrate spring and it is as much as a beautiful garment as it is a beautiful piece of storytelling. The Standard Issue x Tracey Tawhiao ORA blanket has been created from low-impact ethical merino wool weaving in Tracey’s artwork Te Ikaroa a Maui and is designed for home and wear.

The collab “Brings together the belief, that we are from the stars” says Tracey of the artistic garment that features Tracey’s artwork Te Ikaroa a Maui places the long fish of Maui, referring to the milky way at the centre of the design.

“The fish is important in Māori history as it embodies both the original name of NZ Te Ika Maui, the fish of Maui, the famous legend that Maui fished up NZ. and Te Ikaroa a Maui, which is the name of the Milky Way. Consciously crafted in Standard Issue’s Tāmaki Makaurau workroom with a zero-waste output, the versatile one-size ORA blanket can be worn multiple ways as a poncho or used as a throw or comforting couch wrap. knitted in one panel with a centre linked neck opening, it offers a varying colour palette from front to back.

ORA (verb) to be alive, well, safe, cured, recovered, healthy, fit, healed, was chosen by Tracey for this collaboration. optimism, joy, warmth, new beginnings, and fresh growth unfold and bring a highted sense of life as we embrace the natural rhythm of the seasonal change.

Born in 1967, Tracey is a contemporary artist of Ngāi Te Rangi, Tuwharetoa and Whakatōhea descent. Mataatua te waka. Tracey has a storied academic background with a Masters in Philosophy, among a plethora of other academic achievements. She has studied and works in a variety of creative fields, a writer, poet, moving image maker and a unique contemporary artist.

The Piha local, is a published poet and has exhibited her paintings and installations nationally and internationally including, New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London, Tahiti, Italy, Taipei and Beijing.
