Whether you consider it disruption or evolution, traditional business models and the way we do things is now incredibly fluid. The concept of vehicle ownership is no different and is seeing a lot of interesting new approaches to the buy-own-sell model we’re so familiar with, leading the way in new thinking is SIXT New Zealand.

A Giltrap Group owned brand, SIXT compliments the group’s long serving automotive distribution and retail business units, but it does take a very different approach to how its clients utilise vehicles.

SIXT feel the concept of living with the same vehicle for years just seems out of date in these times and it would seem many Kiwis are agreeing with that philosophy and rushing to the brand’s comprehensive suite of vehicle subscription offerings.

“Making a car your own from 1 day to 1 year is really at the heart of what SIXT do,” Says SIXT New Zealand General Manager, Dane Fisher.

“Having the flexibility to change your vehicle depending on your needs or whatever reason is a concept our clients are embracing, both with private vehicle drivers and corporate fleets”

A Subscription model is a power tool for businesses, essentially giving the company the ability to run a flexible field trial on their own terms of new vehicle models or technology to ascertain suitability for a fleet. From there they could look to buy through their traditional channels or perpetually subscribe and that’s what more companies are choosing according to Dane.

“Particularly around electric vehicles, ownership is a big leap for some corporates. With subscription you don’t need to own the asset so they can explore new mobility solutions without risk. And there’s a lot of flexibility with our model that gives organisations the vehicle support they need and only when they need it.”

Not owning the vehicle means those unavoidable considerations, such as depreciation and servicing costs, are not yours to worry about. Pricing is lineball with a traditional three-year finance programme, but the monthly cost is 100% deductible as you don’t own the asset on the balance sheet. All on-road costs (registration and WOF), servicing, insurance, tyres and wear-and-tear are all included as part of the subscription.

The subscription model always delivers the customer a brand-new vehicle; never a demonstrator or used car.

And we’re not talking rental fleet base grade cars either. Dane says there has been a notable adoption of subscription in the super luxury space.

“We have just added 2 Aston Martin DBX SUVs as subscription offerings, a vehicle like this might present a buyer a significant lead time in the current climate. But why wait, if you want one we can provide a subscription while you wait for your vehicle to be produced.”

And if the subscription offering isn’t innovative enough, SIXT now brings driving enthusiasts experience packages. Built with events partner, Downforce, these experiences could include road, track or off-road experiences. The first sold-out event was a multi-day luxury off-road expedition in Land Rover Defenders, among the route were three of New Zealand’s best off road trails. It was hugely popular says Dane,

“In my experience with the vehicle industry, I’ve put one numerous driving events for customers and I don’t think I’ve had one where 100% of attendees were so blown away with what we delivered. It combined New Zealand’s most beautiful scenery, exhilarating off road trails, great food and company, we can’t wait to do it again.”

SIXT are definitely approaching mobility in exciting and innovative new ways and things really are just getting warmed up. There are plenty of exciting new alignments on the horizon and product offerings that will continue to cement the subscription model as a dependable alternative to vehicle ownership.
