Marco Giltrap

Looking to build on momentum and experience gained not only in his debut season of the Toyota 86 Championship, but from many years battling it out in the competitive karting arena, Marco Giltrap has been tipped as one to watch for 2022 and beyond.

ABOUT

Marco Giltrap followed up an impressive five years of competition in karts in 2020 with a move to the popular Toyota 86 Championship in its mini endurance format.

While the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the 2020 season, the three races Giltrap was able to compete in whetted his appetite for a full campaign in the following year’s Toyota 86 Championship.

It was clear the 17-year-old was immediately at home behind the wheel of Toyota’s TR86 race car as the 2021 season got underway. He improved on his performance throughout the season and quickly established himself as a regular challenger near the front of the field.

His sixth-place result was enough to net him ‘Rookie of the Year’ status. Giltrap is now looking to build on the momentum and experience gained last year in the forthcoming 2022 Toyota 86 Championship, with an eye firmly on podium finishes.

Giltrap will line up with the vastly experienced Simon Evans again in the two car Giltrap Group Motorsport-supported team. Giltrap will be backed for his second full season in the championship by title sponsor Lexus of Auckland, along with Giltrap Group, Huffer, Sixt and Colin Waite Panelbeaters.

With a standout performance under his belt last season, Giltrap is expected to be on-pace and competitive from the very first round for 2022 at Highlands Motorsport Park.

2021 SEASON RESULTS

Marco Giltrap finished the 2021 Best Bars Toyota 86 race series in sixth spot and with 697 points to his name after 15 races.

The year would prove exceptionally challenging for last season’s Toyota 86 race series ‘Rookie of the Year’ following a heavy crash at Taupo in June. The incident drew a line under any further race activity for the teenager while he recovered, but news that Giltrap is returning to the grid for the 2022 season shows he has resilience and determination; attributes that will no doubt translate into his efforts on-track as the coming season progresses.

Giltrap’s teammate and mentor, Simon Evans, secured a second place and 968 points behind the wheel of the other Giltrap Group Motorsport-supported Toyota TR86 in the 2021 season.
